WHY LECTURERS CAN TRUST IT

Not AI doing the students' homework

Programming-education research from 2024–2026 is consistent: AI raises assignment scores but not necessarily understanding. Bystep is built on the side the literature recommends — verification, process assessment, critiquing the AI.

  • Criteria before code

    Students write pass/fail criteria for every task before an agent may start. A task is done only when verification passes and evidence is uploaded. Overrides need a reason and are logged.

    3-arm RCT, n=275 (Bassner et al., 2025): unrestricted AI = a "comfort trap"; scaffolded AI preserved motivation.

  • Process assessment, not only the product

    Phase approvals, evidence ratio, and exceptions are recorded all semester — not a report written on the last night.

    412 students over 3 semesters (Zhu et al., 2026): LLM-assisted score gains vanished in closed-book exams → process-oriented assessment.

  • A committed client

    Lecturers and problem owners have a real role: approving phases. Client commitment is the number-one success factor in capstone projects.

A certificate that names skills

Every team that completes receives a certificate with verified metrics (PRDs, evidence ratio, approved phases, readiness score) and a public benchmark link recruiters can check. Badge research: what motivates is the skill description, not the badge.

You graduate when your app is live

A Bystep class does not end with a slide deck. Students pass when their app is actually live and anyone can open it.

  • The app is published and opens on anyone's phone, not just on the student's laptop.
  • Three things must be green: sign-in works, data is saved, and other people's data stays private.
  • The result goes into the class gallery — a portfolio piece to show, not homework that gathers dust.

IDR 299k per team per semester is about IDR 12.5k per student per month. Class and campus prices are derived from the real AI cost per team, so volume discounts are small but kickoff, rubric, and lecturer training are included.

QUESTIONS

What lecturers usually ask

Does this mean students stop learning to code because AI does the work?

Bystep does not write the students' application code. It forces students to write pass/fail criteria, run verification, and upload evidence before a task can be done — exactly the design research recommends so AI is a scaffold, not a substitute for thinking. Strict mode disables overrides for theses.

How do we grade individual contribution in a team?

Every task has an assignee, evidence, and a timestamp. The phase-approval log records who did what. An audit export is available for an individual-contribution rubric.

Do students have to use a specific AI coding agent?

No. The task next → start → verify → complete loop runs through the open-source CLI/MCP and works with Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, Codex, or by hand.

Can it be used for independent-study modules or credit conversion?

Yes, as a monitoring instrument and process evidence. Credit policy stays with the campus; for Campus Partners we help with the supporting paperwork.

What about student data?

Data is used only to run the program, stored on servers in Indonesia, and deleted on request. Student work stays with the students/campus under campus rules.

How does Campus Lead differ from GDG on Campus or a Claude Builder Club?

They don't compete — many leads hold both. Vendor clubs bring credits and community; Bystep brings a proof loop lecturers can grade and a path to P2MW/PKM. Our ask: one build night and one class/community per semester.

What does a team get after finishing?

A certificate with verified metrics, a public benchmark entry, a document pack (PRD, wiki, evidence log, proposal PDF) ready as P2MW/PKM/thesis attachments, and entry to the national Build Challenge.
